The demands being placed on companies to be good citizens are increasing all the time, and regulations and laws are becoming more stringent as crises flare up periodically in society and within trade and industry. The regulations exist at all levels, from international and national level to industry level, and the increasing degree of complexity is making it more and more difficult for industry to live up to its own codes of conduct and the demands being placed on it by authorities and customers.
At the same time, economic crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to stop. Intensified trade beyond the traditional markets and in new areas of competition increases the risks of corruption. Customers require their trademarks to behave as good employers in all the countries in which they exist, while competitors may at the same time be utilising every possible opportunity to reduce their costs. And an increasing number of industries are being subjected to requirements regarding, for example, the reporting of suspected money laundering.
The legislator, the public and customers are demanding that companies deal with their problems, while the companies are busy trying to reduce the risk of taking a wrong step. The disclosure of irregularities or breaches of codes can mean the incurrence of significant costs in the form of the loss of customers and the devaluation of trademarks.
